Job purpose
Northern Improvement is seeking a motivated individual with a strong work ethic and a positive, problem-solving attitude to help lead a successful asphalt paving crew.
The Asphalt Foreman will assist the Asphalt Superintendent with supervision of asphalt paving operations.
This position is for our mainline paving crew and is expected to travel (generally ND, WY, MT) with the crew during the season.
Duties and responsibilities
Supervise and manage asphalt paving approach crew and mainline paving crew
Observe work in progress and provide guidance and direction on work procedures and techniques to asphalt laborers
Provide positive support and encouragement to crew to keep crew members motivated
Collect, review, and sign timecards daily
Work with superintend to develop daily and weekly plans
Effectively communicates the plan with the crew
Communicates daily plans as well as any disruptions with the superintendent and the plant
Monitor asphalt quantities used and calculate cutoff amounts needed for job completion
Work closely with the superintendent to ensure efficiency
Informs Asphalt General Superintendent of performance or operational problems at work sites
Ensures safe work procedures and safe work practices are followed at work sites
Ensures barricades and other safety equipment are set up and in place while work is in progress
Prepares and or assists with preparations of accident and injury reports
Assist the Asphalt Superintendent in hiring field crew (i.
e.
truck drivers, operators, laborers)
Safely operate all equipment used in asphalt paving proficiently and be able to teach others how to run new equipment
Capable of learning new equipment
All other duties as assigned, delegated, or necessary for operations
Qualifications
Minimum 3 years of asphalt experience, with prior supervisory experience preferred
Must possess a valid Driver’s License
Ability to pass a pre-employment urine drug test and comply with drug and alcohol policies during employment
Working conditions
Outdoor environment subject to changing conditions and temperatures
Occasional exposures to fumes, dust, odors, heights, and loud noises
Travel required
May be required to work 60+ hours, 6 days a week

Verbal, auditory, and written capabilities to effectively communicate in an articulate manner
Clarity of vision at varying distances to perform various work assignments
Standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods of time
Ability to work long hours and nights
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of specialized tools and equipment
Reaching overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally
Occasional bending, kneeling, or crouching
Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling object(s) weighing up to 50 pounds
