Seasonal Soil Health Specialist
Duty Station: Bismarck, North Dakota

Pay: $16/hr.

In partnership with the Burleigh County Soil Conservation District’s Menoken Farm, the Great Plains Regional Office of Ducks Unlimited, Inc.
(DU) is seeking motivated and innovative applicants for a soil health specialist located in Bismarck, North Dakota.
The incumbent will work under the direction of DU’s North Dakota Conservation Programs Team to learn a holistic approach to conservation agriculture, wildlife habitat management, and landowner partnership.
The specialist will be involved in a variety of projects related to DU’s soil health programs, DU’s traditional conservation programs, and Menoken Farm’s conservation demonstration site.
Primary Responsibilities:
For one to two days per week: work alongside the pioneering team at the Menoken Farm and gain hands on experience to apply the principles of soil health in the areas of -
Cropping systems, grazing systems, gardening, windbreaks, vermiculture and composting extract, educational events, and seminars.
Learn key concepts including no-till seeding, increasing crop diversity, and short-duration long plant recovery rotational grazing systems.
For three to four days per week: work alongside DU agronomists and biologists in the areas of -
Conservation program delivery, mitigation, engineering, and communications.
Represent DU at field-day events and assist with soil health outreach efforts to landowners and producers.
Visit assigned fields to collect data, including but not limited to soil characteristics, soil sampling and plant identification.
Required skills and education:
Applicant must be at least 18 years old, with a minimum of one year of advanced education in a requisite field (wildlife, agriculture, agronomy, animal science, range science, natural resources) or a closely related field.
Familiarity with basic collection of scientific data.
Excellent communication and organization skills.
Excellent observation and attention to detail skills.
Excellent technology and computer skills.
Successful applicants will be expected to work full-time from May through August.
Field work can be physically demanding.
Applicants must be able to work in all weather for long periods of time often walking over rough and uneven terrain.
