Soil Health Programs Summer Technician
Duty Station: Statewide; located out of Bismarck, North Dakota

Position Duration: Mid-May 2024 - Mid-August 2024; with some flexibility
Pay: $16/hr.

(DU).
DU is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented summer technician to join our crew and assist in collecting valuable soil health data.
This position with the North Dakota Conservation Programs Team is a real opportunity to work closely with conservation biologists and agronomists to apply skills learned at college through hands-on experience.
Your work will directly contribute to the advancement of our soil health research efforts and DU’s goals of conserving, restoring, and managing wetlands and associated habitats to benefit wildlife and people.
Primary responsibilities and skill development:
Learn and develop working-lands conservation related skills for the Prairie Pothole Region.
Build a working knowledge of soil health principles, including grazing infrastructure design, soil testing and monitoring, and multi-species cover crop mixes.
Visit assigned fields to collect agronomic data, including but not limited to soil characteristics and soil sampling, plant identification, and noxious weed presence.
Follow protocols and guidelines to ensure consistent, efficient, and accurate data collection.
Shadow agronomists and biologists on daily responsibilities.
Assist in organizing collected data, collaborate with team to interpret data, and share with farmers and ranchers.
Learn to maintain work equipment and safely use equipment, including but not limited to soil probes and ATVs.
Required skills and education:
A minimum one year of advanced education in a requisite field (wildlife, agriculture, agronomy, range science, natural resources) or a closely related field
Strong interests in wildlife conservation and soil health or agronomy research
Familiarity with basic collection of scientific data, field data collection techniques and tools
Excellent observation and attention to detail skills
Excellent technology and computer skills
Excellent communication skills
Field work can be physically demanding.
Applicants must be able to work in all weather conditions for long periods of time, often walking over rough and uneven terrain.
There will be frequent travel, therefore, only enthusiastic and dedicated individuals should apply.
A valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and pre-employment drug screen are required.
