Job Summary
Responsible for managing and facilitating coding related functions within the Health Information Management (HIM) Department.
Directs coding related functions in an efficient and effective manner.
Responsible for monitoring and managing staff adherence to coding regulations and nationally recognized coding guidelines and practices.
Provides leadership and technical expertise to department employees in areas of responsibility.
Highly accountable for attainment of department and section goals.
Emphasizes accuracy, productivity and completion of work within established time frames.
Orients, trains, schedules, evaluates and provides ongoing continuing education.
Follows up on missing information; documents and records by interacting with other departments and physicians.
Interviews, hires, and disciplines employees.
Works with department director to address staffing issues, budget considerations, service excellence and employee satisfaction issues.
Plans for and implements new processes and makes recommendations related to the budgeting process.
Maintains appropriate staffing levels.
Accepts responsibility for special projects assigned by the director on an as-needed basis.
Responsible for assisting the director with adherence to hospital compliance mandates and regulatory directives.
Serves as a role model for Health Information Management staff in professionalism, attitude, knowledge, demeanor and execution of duties.
Required to use problem solving and decision making skills in various situations.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Logical thinking and the ability to acquire an intricate knowledge of computer system software and hardware.
Well organized with the ability to direct and motivate staff, teach others and monitor compliance to established standards, plan and direct work.
Ability to work in a team environment, apply professional knowledge to critical thinking skills in areas of assignment and be accountable for decisions made.
Effective and efficient meeting management skills, be flexible, creative and possess a willingness to implement new ideas.
Outstanding professionalism, poise, tact, and skillful at managing change.
Individual will work extensively with protected health information and is required to adhere to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability (HIPAA) privacy and security regulations and policies related to same.
Qualifications
Associate degree in Health Information Technology required.
Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management preferred.
Extensive knowledge of health information/medical record related practices and concepts.
Prior supervisory/leadership experience highly desirable.
Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) through the American Health Information Management Association required.
