Job Summary
Performs extracorporeal circulation using heart-lung machines and ancillary devices for medical and surgical support.
Assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and supervise or document the care of patients delivered in accordance with established standards of performance.
Performs extra corporeal circulation, using heart-lung machines during various cardiac surgeries to allow cardiac surgeons to focus on performing procedures.
Performs cardiopulmonary perfusions in various cardiac surgeries to ensure patients' circulatory and respiratory needs are met.
Operates heart-lung machines and other relevant equipment for cardiopulmonary perfusion.
Monitors a spectrum of physiologic parameters and copes with emergency situations during cardiopulmonary perfusion procedures.
Adheres to quality assurance policies and procedures to ensure accurate and safe practices in cardiopulmonary perfusion.
Operation of blood salvage and blood hemoconcentration devices (Cell Saver/hemoconcentrator).
In addition, the clinical perfusionist often functions in supportive roles for other medical specialties.
Manages HIPEC pumping and heating systems for general surgical chemotherapy treatments.
Involved in setup, priming, initiation and trouble-shooting of ECMO for cardiac and/or pulmonary support of patients outside of the operation room environment.
Ability to communicate with patients, family members, and others on the healthcare team.
Ability to solve problems.
Ability to document clearly and communicate in writing.
Ability to perform and evaluate laboratory tests.
Ability to manage fluids, blood, and electrolyte therapy.
Ability to monitor and support using current perfusion techniques.
Ability to work with the growth and development needs of all client populations.
Provides leadership to other perfusionists and functions as a member of the heart services leadership team.
Responsible for team assignments and on-call scheduling.
Responsible for staff training and annual competencies for POCT instruments.
Responsible for reports regarding financial and departmental activities, prepare and submit an annual department budget, and implement department policies and procedures.
Works effectively in a fast-paced complex, rapid-changing environment.
Has good effective rapport between administration and staff members.
Qualifications
Graduate from an accredited school of cardiovascular perfusion is required.
Two years experience as a Perfusionist is preferred.
Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) is required.
Currently no licensure process for clinical perfusionist in South Dakota.
